Main Research Areas

The Institute for Medieval History covers the whole Middle Ages of Continental Europe with regional focus areas. A particular emphasis is on source oriented basic research both with traditional and recently established methodological approaches. Research areas include constitutional and legal history, social and economic history, urban and ecclesiastical history as well as material culture, digital humanities, and cultural history of law. Regional focus areas are Cologne, Alsace, Northern Italy and England.
