Collecting and selecting, organizing and interpreting
History(s) written by craftsmen and their chronicles in the 15th and 16th centuries

The project examines urban chronicles of the 15th and 16th centuries written by craftsmen. Based on nine chroniclers from six German-speaking cities, the manuscripts are analyzed both in terms of content and material. The study shows how craftsmen acted as historians, which sources they used and how they positioned themselves in inner-city conflicts. In addition, a new internal structure of urban chronicles is developed, which clarifies their function as a form of knowledge organization and historiography.

The habilitation process was successfully completed in 2022.
